[12] Denis Shapovalov vs. [7] David Goffin

This looks to be the match of the day between the Canadian and Belgian. The two share the same odds going into the match, and have played impressive tennis thus far at the US Open.

Shapovalov had to go the distance to advance to the round of 16, defeating Taylor Fritz 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7(7)-6(5), 6-2. It was a tough battle between the two and Shapovalov found himself down two sets to one, and losing in the fourth. But he was able to improve his game towards the end, picking up 31 winners and only committing 10 unforced errors in the last two sets.

Goffin on the other hand, won his match in straight sets. He’s played through his fair share of tough matches this tournament, having played smart tennis to continuously advance. The Belgian star has been very smart defensively throughout the US Open.

These two have only seen each other once before, last year at the Japan Open, and Goffin took that match in straight sets. Goffin’s two-handed backhand is considered one of the best on tour right now, and Shapovalov has a huge serve. Being a lefty might play into Shapovalov’s advantage, by being able to serve wide to his opponent.

Expect this one to go the distance, and for it to be a battle. It’s a tough call here but Goffin does have more experience, and we’ve see Shapovalov be a little inconsistent. Not to mention, Goffin will be the more rested player of the two. This match will be Shapovalov’s fourth in just three days, as he is also participating in doubles play. Ultimately that amount of recovery time between matches could be the difference.

Pick: Goffin (-112)

A match between 27th seed Borna Coric and unseeded Jordan Thompson might be a much more competitive matchup than initially expected.

Coric is coming off a huge upset, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the previous round, sending the fourth seed home in what was a battle of a match.

This is the first time in eight years that Thompson has made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam, beating his opponent, Mikhail Kukushin in straight sets. Coric will be his first seeded player that he has faced in the tournament.

The two players have faced each other once before, way back in 2013, where Coric came back from a set down to win in three. The two have had much different careers up until this point, but find themselves playing similar tennis at the US Open. This one won’t be an easy sweep in straight sets, but don’t expect it to go all the way to five. Thompson should be able to take one set from Coric, but Coric seems to be the best bet here.

Pick: Coric (-167)

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs. [5] Alexander Zverev

Zverev heads into the next round with the chance of making a deep run at the US Open, now being the second highest seeded played in the top half.

21-year old Fokina has had himself a week. He’s defeated much higher ranked opponents in all of his matches he’s played at the tournament. Zverev found himself down one set, but easily found his way back to complete the win, and move on to the round of 16.

Going into this match, Zverev is the strong favorite, and it’s no surprise there given his ranking and experience over Fokina. Fokina will give it his best effort, and has exceeded everyone’s expectations by making it to the round of 16, but Zverev should be able to take this match in straight sets.

Best Bet: [5] Zverev (-910)
