Through three rounds, it is anybody’s Houston Open tournament to win with a jam-packed leaderboard featuring Sam Burns on top by just a single shot. He’s ahead of Jason Day and Carlos Ortiz and three up on tournament favorite Dustin Johnson, who has shot back-to-back 66’s.

The 24-year-old Burns has never won on the PGA Tour but has had a few brushes with a chance at a title in the last couple of years, and he was one of our sleepers heading into the week at astronomical +10000 odds to win outright.

Read on to see the updated odds and the best bets to make for Sunday’s final round.

Sam Burns In Search of First Victory

Among the many talented young players in the world of golf right now is Sam Burns, who earlier in the season at the Safeway Open was right in the thick of things heading into the final round. This week, he has a perilous one-shot edge over Jason Day and Carlos Ortiz and he’s doing it with his ball-striking.

Sam Burns holds a one-stroke lead after three rounds of the Vivint Houston Open, the first 54-hole lead/co-lead of his PGA TOUR career.

Burns is first in strokes gained off-the-tee, tee-to-green and proximity to the hole through 54 holes to offset his pedestrian 43rd rank putting stats at the Houston Open.

We believed in him heading into the week because Bermuda grass is his preferred surface and he hasn’t disappointed. If you’re looking to lay a wager on him now, however, that might be tougher to stomach with his low +350 odds.

He is leading the event and doesn’t have the shortest odds on the board so a wager on Burns is still a good idea giving how well he’s hitting it. Jason Day, who hasn’t won in two and a half years is at +220 to take the title which isn’t as enticing with him not even in front.

  1. Dustin Johnson (+480): After knocking off the rust following a six-week layoff in round one DJ has shot back-to-back 66’s and can win golf tournaments in his sleep. Apart from Jason Day, nobody in front of him has won on the PGA Tour. He’s been spectacular in his last five events, with two wins, two runner-ups, and a T-6 at the US Open. T-2nd in birdies this week with 14 and he’s third in SG: off-the-tee.
  2. Sepp Straka (+1000): Sepp finds himself just two back of the leader Burns, and sports solid odds. First in the tournament in strokes gained approaching the green, gaining a whopping eight strokes on the field. Also has putted well this week, ranking T-9th in putts per green in regulation. Straka was also another one of our sleeper picks to do well this week.
  3. Aaron Wise (+2700): Aaron finds himself four back of the lead with these juicy odds. Tied for second through 54 holes in greens in regulation which will give him plenty of birdie opportunities for the final round. After winning the 2018 AT&T Byron Nelson he hasn’t contended as much as it seemed like he would but he’s posted three top-26 results in his last six events.
