Former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn and undefeated prospect Tim Tszyu throw down at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville, Queensland, on Wednesday, August 26th. For those stateside, the bout will take place at 5:00am ET.

The IBO Australasian super welterweight and WBO Global super welterweight belts are on the line in an all-Australian affair. The fight will reportedly have over 16,000 fans attending in a socially-distanced manner.

Tim Tszyu’s Chance to Step Out of Dad’s Shadow

This is a big step up in competition for the son of the legendary pugilist Kostya Tszyu. Kostya was a world champion for over half a decade, and son Tim has the chance to jettison himself towards a crack at a world title of his own.

He seems confident, coming off a highlight-filled TKO victory over Jack Brubaker in Dec. 2019.

This is Tszyu’s first time headlining a stadium show, and the heat of the bright lights will surely add to the pressure-cooker dynamic in the ring. Tszyu has been engaging in some trash talk recently, saying that he won’t be a one-fight wonder like Horn. He is of course referencing Horn’s controversial decision victory over Manny Pacquiao in 2017.

Horn has been talking smack as well in his assertions that Tszyu is riding his famous father’s coattails, and that the young fighter doesn’t have the quality of resume or stamina in the ring to hang with him.

Jeff Horn’s Curious Underdog Status

Since the aforementioned Pacquiao upset, Horn has gone 3-2 with losses to Terence Crawford and Michael Zerafa. Horn would avenge the loss to Zerafa in his last outing.

He bested Zerafa in their December 2019 rematch, which saw Horn capture the WBA Oceania Middleweight and WBO Oriental Middleweight titles. This is a battle between internationally renowned 154 pound fighters, but there are unofficial stakes here to determine the best Aussie pugilist.

The edge in experience goes to Horn, due to his experience both professionally and as an amateur. He was a 2012 Olympian, and has razor sharp sense of the ring honed from the time on that elite circuit.

Horn has said in the lead up to this one that he sees some defensive vulnerabilities and thinks he’ll have a size advantage over Tszyu. Tszyu has the youthful edge as well as the superior finishing ability and punching power in this matchup.

Horn should be able to get the job done here, and I think he presents some really good underdog value. He has the objectively superior resume and many pundits were actually surprised that Tszyu’s handlers would book such an ambitious bout for their young charge.  In the end, I see Jeff Horn getting the victory via judges’ decision.
